Self Driving Cars- All That You Should Know

Self Driving cars -a future concept gradually turning into reality. Fast-growing innovation has made it all real. These self-driving cars are also called by many names like AV (Autonomous Vehicle), CAV (Connected and Autonomous Vehicles), driverless cars, and whatnot.

So far, companies like Waymo and Tesla are leading in the AV market. They are tirelessly trying on to boost from the level of automation they are currently having to the next level. Waymo- A subsidiary Alphabet Inc. company previously owned by Google till the time it became an independent company in 2016. This company has made a great achievement when it comes to the AV market.

Coming to Tesla, this is a new company but one of the fastest-growing car companies in the world. Recently one of its cars, Model 3, was named as the best selling car of April 2020 in Britain. Tesla has already left some of the very big car companies behind in a very short period that no one could have ever imagined and that also by an AV company.

Now leaving all those companies stuffs behind, we should get into knowing as to how this automation works? Well, for this, they need various things like LIDAR, SONAR, RADAR, GPS, and a lot more IT units. Based on how automated a vehicle is, they have been classified into six types. Well, it must be just five levels cause level 0 is just the normal that we drive with 0% automation. Moving on to the detailed overview of all the automation level, here we go-

Level 0 Automation- This is just the normal cars that we drive these days which cannot run without a driver, on its own for even a minute

Level 1 Automation- This level of automation is seen in some cars like BMW and Honda, where the driver is helped by systems like lane departure assists and adaptive cruise control.

Lane Departure Assist– It is a system in which the mechanism suggests the driver when the car begins to move out of the lane.

Adaptive Cruise Control -The mechanism which adjusts the vehicle speed to maintain a safe distance from the traffic ahead of them.

Level 2 Automation- In this system, the cars can be driving themself on their own, but still, the driver needs to be 100% awake and aware as to what is going during the whole time of their journey.

Level 3 automation- This is just an upgraded version of Level 2 automation where the cars can run on their own without 100% human intervention from now and then.

Level 4 automation- Google’s Waymo lies in this category. In this level of automation, the cars can drive themselves with no driver at all, but the speed limit is always taken into consideration.

Level 5 automation- This can just be called as the beast unleashed. In this level of automation, the driver is not needed at all. The car is self capable of adjusting to any traffic situations, any terrain, etc.
